Good News from New Orleans

Lots of happy faces today as you can imagine, as the sheer awfulness of what happened in New Orleans starts to sink in. Obviously the cost and the effects on the economy are the main thing, but some entities have been saying that the effect on American morale could be even more important. It could bring forward the collapse of America by up to three months. Good news!

Latest from Baghdad

2376 came by again, looking increasingly harried. He says there's no chance of the Constitution being adopted, but it's increasingly hard to be sure of anything. The Americans are out of the game, that's clear, and no-one takes them seriously any more. But we thought we would have more influence: the objective, as agreed at the Workstream 4.7 planning meeting last November, was to have just enough progress to keep the Americans involved, so that they eventually bankrupt themselves. But it's all proving a bit more difficult than we thought.

Having Krugman Killed

1776 was giving us a hard time at the video-conference today abou the economist Paul Krugman. He says (quite rightly) that Krugman's columns are the only honest reporting there is on the US economy, and so quite dangerous. he wants to have Krugman killed before he reveals too much. Of course, Krugman only has glimpses of the real situation - he thinks it's just greed and stupidity in Washington. In the end, 1776 was told to calm down: no-one really takes Krugman seriously outside those who read the New York Times.

More US Clones

An email came round today. It said:
"The Neo-conservative Clone Unit was established in 1996, to manage the increasing number of clones infiltrated into positions of power in Washington. However, in 2001, the Pentagon Clone Unit was set up to cope with the far greater than expected recruitment of clones into the Pentagon. There has been some confusion between the two. From 1 September, therefore, the organisations will be known as the General Neocon Clone Unit and the Pentagon Neocon Clone Unit. All Lyrans are expected to observe these names."
Thought you would like to know.

The Tour d'Argent.

Got back from the UAE this morning with promises of money, but no troops. They want to put Bush on trial, which is not a problem. Then I was ambushed by 719.
"Aha" he said. "I've been waiting for you to come back. The restaurant - the best in Paris. Did you really have to take him there? You know the rules on bribery - it has to be as cost-effective as all other forms of expenditure." He smirked.
"OK," I said. "Listen. The guy wanted to go there. Set his heart on it. So I spend three hundred Euros. In return, we have a vote for continuation of the war, and the US economy collapses sooner and we can all go home. If I'd spent half as much and got half a vote, would you be happy?"
I slammed the door.

Garang: A Tragedy

Bit worrying, this Garang thing. Sudan was the back-up site for the launch of our spaceship. Let's hope they don't start fighting again.
