On the other hand ...

It doesn't get to be too despondent, I suppose. With a few more hurricanes this year, the US economy could even go belly-up earlier than we thought. Start praying for rain. Look at the chaos from the latest storm - millions trapped in world's largest traffic jam. What a country! And a pity about those 24 old folks barbecued on the bus, but you have to laugh, don't you?

Is it All Going Wrong

I suppose I could be a pessimist - a few hundred years on this shit-hole of a planet would drive anyone crazy - but I'm just starting to get worried that maybe all this Katrina and Iraq stuff will eventually drive Americans back to sanity. And where would we be then? Up a tgyfwq tree, as Lyrans say.

Costs of Katrina - the Sequel

Woo-hoo! It gets better - or worse, I suppose, if you are an insurance company. The number-crunchers reckon all this could shave a couple of months off the return.

Costs of Katrina

Amazing stuff about the costs of that hurricane - figures of anything up to 100 Billion dollars are being bandied around. Couldn't be better from our perspective, of course, but it does make you think - not a single Lyran was involved in any of it. When I think of the effort that goes into programing the clones to increase the budget deficit .....

In Line for a Bonus?

Amazing scenes of social breakdown in New Orleans. Looks like workstream 11.2 succeeded better than we ever realised. I should think that 818 - who's been involved in this since Nixon's time - must be in line for a bonus

Too much of a good thing?

Actually, people are beginning to wonder whether the hurricane isn't a bit too much of a good thing. The way things are going, it could actually bring Bush down, and replace his cronies with people who would withdraw from Iraq. Not such a good idea. But on the other hand, as 1001 very wisely said, you have to put your trust in the essential greed, stupidity and corruption of the American political system.
